From Wiktionary under the GNU Free Documentation License. An Allergy is a disorder of the immune system often also referred to as atopy. Allergic reactions occur to normally harmless environmental substances known as allergens; these reactions are acquired, predictable, and rapid. Strictly, allergy is one of four forms of hypersensitivity and is called type I (or immediate) hypersensitivity. It is characterized by excessive activation of certain white blood cells called mast cells and basophils by a type of antibody known as IgE, resulting in an extreme inflammatory response. Common allergic reactions include eczema, hives, hay fever, asthma attacks, food allergies, and reactions to the venom of stinging insects such as wasps and bees. Mild allergies like hay fever are highly prevalent in the human population and cause symptoms such as allergic conjunctivitis, itchiness, and runny nose. Allergies can play a major role in conditions such as asthma. In some people, severe allergies to environmental or dietary allergens or to medication may result in life-threatening anaphylactic reactions and potentially death. A variety of tests now exist to diagnose allergic conditions; these include testing the skin for responses to known allergens or analyzing the blood for the presence and levels of allergen-specific IgE. Treatments for allergies include allergen avoidance, use of anti-histamines, steroids or other oral medications, immunotherapy to desensitize the response to allergen, and targeted therapy. The medical specialty concerned with allergies is allergology. From Wikipedia under the
GNU Free Documentation License What is a good allergy medicine to use for allergies? Q. I am using Claritin right now for my allergies but, it doesn't seem to work! Does anybody know any good allergy medicine that has worked for them? Thanks in advance!!! Asked by magicman29 - Thu May 28 01:01:34 2009 - - 13 Answers - 0 Comments A. If Claritin did or is not working you need to see a Dr. I have many allergies and take many different medication for different things. I hesitate to state a list of names as with out seeing a MD it would be so easy to take the incorrect medication that could end up doing you more harm than good.Allergies are not any fun my heart goes out to you. Answered by Carol - Thu May 28 01:26:25 2009 My poor dog has seasonal allergies. Any home remedies I am can give her? Q. I have an Akita mix, and I have read that they are more likely to get seasonal allergies. But every year about this time she just scratches and scratches. I have given her oatmeal baths, which seems to help for a bit. I have thought about giving her just regular old benedryl, but I am not sure how much to give (she weighs maybe 50 lbs). Any suggestions for either home remedies or products I can buy to help her? I am having a temp money crunch and cant afford to take her to the vet at this moment. Q. Pollen is everywhere! I can't escape it, and neither can the millions of people who suffer from seasonal allergies like I do. I've always got a stuffy nose, and perpetually itchy/watery/red eyes during the Spring season. For my fellow allergy sufferers out there, how do you deal with it? Know of any effective allergy medicines? (Claritin has stopped working for me!) How can I keep my eyes from getting so irritated?
