Do electrostatic air cleaners for a household gas furnace work?
Q. I'm thinking of getting a whole house electrostatice air cleaner installed? Do they actually work better than the regular fiberglass/allergy/paper filters? Is there any negative aspects to using them?

A. I would Highly recommend a Media Type Air Cleaner. I owned a electrostatic air cleaner for about 5 years and wasted too much money on them. The biggest problem with them is the main circuit board goes bad and every time that happened it would cost about $500 and it happened about 3 times in 5 years so about $1500 to keep my house air clean and that air cleaner did not really do anything to keep my house air clean,Plus it is a pain to clean those cells every month. What the manufacture does is change the style about every two years so along with it the part "main board" changes also prices for the main board keep going up.Most of the electrostatic air cleaners are becoming extinct. I got rid of that air cleaner and purchased a… [cont.]

A. My mother has emphysema with breathing difficulties so three of us kids pitched in and bought her a Oreck air filter and if there is a better one I don't know. The Oreck XL Professional is expensive but by far the easiest to maintain and one heck of a maintenance package. Here is a link to their website and by the way, they have a sale on now too.

Which side is the ionizer and which is the collection plate on a whole house air cleaner?
Q. I took the filters out of the 2 whole house air cleaners to 2 hvac units so I could clean them and then couldn't remember which one went to which. The air first passes through the prefilter screens, then the ionizer and then the collection plate. Does anyone know if the collection plate is the side that looks like louvers or the tighter looking side? If it helps any, they are Trion HE 2000 plus electronic air cleaners.

A. Look for an arrow mark on the units that will indicate the direction of the air flow somewhere near the handle. This may help. Also note how the electrodes contact the units to see if the alignment this may also help. Look for cut marks on the housing. On my electrostatic air filter there are thin wires that act as the ionizer so with some careful observation you may notice differences.

does anyone have info on air-cleaners?
Q. I have a lrg oreck which no longer works. I've seen 2 for 1 ads about Sharper Image but in looking on the internet they have poor reviews. Primarily I seek air cleaning or dust removal. The extra bio scrubing is not required (but nice). Sharper Image seems to have multiple devices with various claims along with reviews disputing them.

A. The best filters are HEPA filters. They are used in microbiology labs to filter bacteria and viruses out of the air. Electrostatic filters do ok. The problem is that most put ozone (they rarely call it that, they refer to negative ions) into the air. Ozone is a free radical and a pollutant. Avoid anything that has an ozonator in it.

how do ionic air cleaners move air electronically?
Q.
Asked by mmistry11 - Thu Feb 23 13:36:23 2006 - Physics - 1 Answers - Comments

A. The air passes through a membrane that is charged so that charged particles in the air are attracted to it. Not only does this move the air, but it takes the particles out of the air.

Vent cleaners: some blow air, some suck air, and some use rotary brushes. Which is best?
Q. I have to hire vent-cleaners for our Co-op. We have 32 units/dryer vents, plus a laundry room with 3 dryers. There is no record of vents being cleaned in 20 years. Some vents exit on roof, some on side of building. Some people have dryers hooked up, some do not. What kind of vent-cleaning do you recommend? Thank you

A. Been looking into it. Wisdom so far... for rigid ducting the powered brushes are the most aggressive if the ducts are up to it. Just blowing or vacuuming is better than nothing esp if there is flex as well as rigid duct. Some outfits have video cameras that can "crawl "around for "before & after " proof of work After cleaning the ducts should be blown out & if necessary to be vacuumed from inside they had better do a good job of trapping dust & cleaning up. So far have found only one outfit I can afford for a one family home w/ forcet hot air & AC...around $500 because of flex supply ducts, bath exhausts & dryer vent Best regards

Asked by frogginon - Mon Sep 15 15:48:39 2008 - Birds - 2 Answers - Comments

A. There is not to much you can use around birds at all. I use natural cleaners but always put birds behind closed doors and leave windows open in house for 1 hour after. Better safe than sorry. Do not ever use any aerosols of any kind that can kill birds very fast. They have these wipes called poop off that clean and they have a pleasant odor to them. They can be used on and in bird cages also. If I want to deodorize house I boil water and drop some cinnamon sticks in with some apple. Also note that all teflon pans are toxic to birds contain chemicals that can kill in secs when overheated. Same with self cleaning ovens. List goes on and on. No scented candles either. Birds are difficult but sooo worth it. :)

Questions about electrostatic air cleaners?
Q. Electrostatic air cleaners, also called electrostatic precipitators, are used in many industries to help reduce air pollution. These cleaning devices are installed inside smokestacks to remove particles of dust, soot ash, and other polluting materials in smoke so that they don t reach the air we breathe. The cleaners work by using the forces of electric attraction and repulsion. The charged particles in smoke are attracted to collection plates that have the opposite electric charge. The particles remain on the plates instead of moving out into the air. The particles that enter the smokestack are electrically neutral. What has to happen to them as they move upward and reach the collection plates? Why? To collect the greatest number of… [cont.]

A. You have a pretty good handle on the operation of electronic precipitators, except you missed one step. The smoke particles will pass by charging wires to change their natural charge to the opposite charge of the plates that are directly after the charging wires. This way the efficiency of the precipitator will usually come out to about 99% down to 0.3 microns. The collection plates are placed so close together that once they build up with dust and particles that they start to snap or arc from one plate to the next. They are spaced closely to allow the maximum number of plates in the unit. The more plates, the more surface area for capturing particles. Aluminum is usually used because of its conductivity to electrical charge and resistance… [cont.]

Are ionic air cleaners effective for allergy to tree & plant pollen?
Q. I'm in Florida and the air is full of pollens including lots of live oak. Is the ionic air cleaner effective in reducing allergic reaction? Are the filter types more effective? It is controversial on google. I'm hoping to hear some personal experiences. Thanks.
Asked by kyq - Wed Mar 14 02:05:23 2007 - Allergies - 3 Answers - Comments

A. I am sure this will tick off the ionic breeze owners but here you go any way; as one other person suggested, do a google on it and see what you find. Consider this, these contraptions, in principle, generate positive ions that are released into the air, right, okay, but how are they distributed around the house? My point is that they aren't. Yes, these ions can be attracted to and will attach to a number of things floating in the air but only upon contact and only if these particles find their way into the room with the machine and within a few feet of the machine. Those things can't produce enough ions to cover your whole house, much less an entire room, and if they did it would be dangerous and unhealthy. In order to cover the whole… [cont.]

What do air cleaners or purifiers do?
Q. can they help with certain allergies
Asked by Jack moon - Fri May 20 09:36:58 2011 - Alternative Medicine - 2 Answers - Comments

A. Unless you're 100% certain that the allergy is due to pollen or house dust, then they're just about useless. Even if it's due to the above, you're still going to need a top quality air filter, as there's a heck of a lot of poor quality ones out there, as well as some that hardly work at all.

A. Sorry guys, I just saw on the news Friday that air cleaners such as these if used over a period of a few months, drop your air quality inside your home. They said that your home's air quality would be the same as a smoggy day in California. So you may want to think twice about using them.

A. Actually you might want to investigate the harmful effects ionic air cleaners can create. From what I understand it emits dangerous ozone levels in your home. If its broke don't fix it. I would do some research before using it again. If anything simply use a better filter in your A/C. I hope that helps.

A. the more filters you have in the system the better the air quality,,,because it gets more of the dirt and dust out of the air. However you should keep your eye on them and dont let them get too clogged up where it would affect the air flow.
