Any advice on selecting a duct cleaning company?
Q. Any advice on selecting a duct cleaning company?

A. Ask your friends and neighbors to see if they have had this type of service done and see who they recommend in your area. Referrals are the best way to find a decent company for service--it's better than going into it blind by calling someone random in the phone book.

How can I find a good air duct cleaning service?
Q. Just bought an older house. When we turn on the whole house fan, even with lots of windows open, some air is still drawn through our vents. This causes severe alergy attacks for my wife. The previous owners never had the furnace serviced, weren't the cleanest people, and had several cats. I can only imagine how nast all of the air ducts are. I cleaned out a couple of the reurn ducts and they were nasty with dust and construction debris. I want to have the system cleaned out well. I've gotten several quotes that vary pretty greatly in cost $179-$450. We have a small home with a finished basement that also has heating ducts. I want to choose a service that will do a great job, but have heard that some do a much better job than… [cont.]

A. Ask for refernces from each company; Call the Better Business Bureau and find out which one has claims of bad business practices. Put an ad in the paper asking anyone with problems of any service to please contact you. . For a small house; $450 sounds awfully high. If you hire one; stay with them and watch to see they are really doing the job.

A. It depends on the size of the house so get bids. Many carpet cleaners also do this work since there are many scam artists in this business. I use referrals from Angie's List or Service Pro. Normally it is in the $200-400 range.

air duct cleaning and carpet cleaning?
Q. I am planning on getting both of them done at my house but not sure which order to do them in. Should i do carpet cleaning after the air duct cleaning. Because i assume after the air ducts are cleaned there might be some dust in the air that will settle on the carpets. not sure if that logic is correct. please help.

I'm looking for opinions of the validity of air duct cleaning.?
Q. I've gotten contradicting information from various sources, all of which I feel are trustworthy. One source says it's crucial, especially in the ancient house I live in (built 1912) and considering my son's allergy to cats (there were cats in our house for years recently). Another source says it simply works up dormant toxic substances into the air of the rest of the house. Does anyone out there know much about the process, how to be selective about who to trust to hire or is it a waste of money?

A. Cleaning the air ducts in a central heated system is much like getting a chimney sweep. Those houses that need the job done are usually critical. Those which do not need it will end up wasting time and money. You can perform a simple test by taping a single piece of white paper (tape along one edge only, usually the closest edge to the wall for horizontal vents or the upper edge for vertical vents) over one of the vents farthest from the furnace. Spritz the paper with water (damp, not wet). Allow the blower to operate for about one hour. Check out the paper using a magnifying glass. Repeat with black construction paper. A clean system which has always had good filters will not leave much residue on the papers. A dirty system will… [cont.]

Truck-mounted or portable air duct cleaning?
Q. Which is really the best method? What gets the ducts cleanest? Also, some companies now offer the installation (for about $400) of in-line UV light (which kills mold, bacteria). Does anyone have one of these units? Does it help you? Note: Change the 3M disposable furnace filter every 3 months, & ductwork is 10 years old & has been cleaned twice before, but not by truck-mount method. aswkingfish: It seems like a lot of expense and time to find & buy a portable air-monitoring device and go through all you describe. One method must be better than the other & I hope to choose from anecdotal input from people who have perhaps tried both. Asked by dsjnix - Fri Feb 16 12:20:07 2007 - - 5 Answers - 1 Comments

A. I used to work for a duct cleaning company and the joke was" we got their money!". I do HVAC work as well and the truth is, having your ducts cleaned can help if you suffer from allergies or upper respiratory problems, but its really not worth the money unless your ducts are really dirty. If you see a LOT of dust on your returns you probably need to get a cleaning. You can always use a vacuum to clean your returns, and make sure you change your filters often. I personally don't recommend a duct cleaning unless the house is REALLY old and the returns are filthy!

A. Just used them yesterday. I live in Staten Island and the total cost was 441.00. Two guys came and took off all the vents covers and returns, wiped them clean with a cleaner and clean the air ducts using the agitator and vacuum. I have a small townhouse and it took them less than 2 hrs. They also did my dryer vent. A lot of stuff came out, seems like the previous owners never did anything.

How much should air duct cleaning cost for a 775 sq. foot condo?
Q. It's 775 sq. ft. with 5 vents total. On the 4th floor in the Denver metro area. I was just quoted $500. That seems extremely high. Anybody know how much is standard?
Asked by Quake22 - Tue Jul 15 16:05:22 2008 - - 3 Answers - 0 Comments

A. I agree that is very high. I have 12 vents in my 2,000 sq. ft. house and it cost me $675, which included carpet and basement cleaning. The initial quote the same company gave me was $2,100; I had them bring it down partly by getting rid of superfluous services and partly just hard negotiating. Good luck!

Q. service." I never hear anything about duct cleaning these days. About nine years ago, I had my AC unit replaced, and while it was disconnected from the tubing, I looked inside. A. In some markets where people are paranoid about germs they still market this pretty heavily. Other markets where people have figured out the truth you have to ask for it. My house for example was built in 1958 and when I replaced the furnace the return air duct only had about 1/8" of dust. Remember the return air duct sucks unfiltered air right off the floor. The supply lines had less dust then my TV screen picks up in a week. The only place that benefits from shoving the hose of your shop vac down is right at the floor grills. Especially if you have kids. That is where cob webs and dust pile up. Once you get a few feet in to the ducts they are usually clean. If your house has been infested with mice or you bought a house from a… [cont.]

Q. Iwas wondering if it is worth the $250 or so, to have my heating ducts cleaned ? Many have told me its just a made up trade to scare people into believing the health risks.
Asked by aus2can - Wed Sep 13 06:52:33 2006 - - 4 Answers - 0 Comments

A. It's really not often necessary to clean the ducts, The moving air that travels through them keeps them clean enough. Although their are situations where I recommend it. Because a home was kept unusually dirty and no air filter was ever used on the system, it can have allot of material in the ducts that need to be removed which harbor bugs and bacteria.

Is the landlord responsible for air duct cleaning? Isn't this considered regular property maintenance?
Q. Should I withhold rent if this is not addressed within 1 month?
Asked by quest-ions2012 - Mon Sep 8 20:43:04 2008 - - 5 Answers - 0 Comments

A. No, it is not regular maintenance. It is not required at all. You can not legally withhold for this, and the landlord is not obligated to clean the ducts. Clean them yourself if you are in a tizzy about them.

A. Actually, I would form a limited liability company to limit your personal liability in case something goes wrong. Legally, there is no difference between you and your DBA. This site might help clarify licensing requirements

Q. for a house that's about 2700sq feet
Asked by Sweet Caroline - Fri May 28 21:04:39 2010 - - 2 Answers - 0 Comments

A. If the carpet isn't to soiled, we charge around .28 to .32 cents per square foot. Take the length times the width to come up with the actual square feet of the carpet to be cleaned. Many square feet figures provided include hard floors. Steps may run around $2.50 to 3,50 per step, depending on how dirty and how wide they are. Moving furniture may be an extra charge as this requires more time. The average hot water carpet cleaner must make about $100.00 dollars per hour if there are two of them, to comeout. Some spills and spots may require special solutions, that are expensive, and will charged out on the invoice. We provide wire cage fans to assist in the drying effort at no extra charge. Also, some heavy traffic areas may be scotch… [cont.]
