Salmonella Typhi Answers

how does salmonella typhi harm the body's cells, tissues and organ?
Q. can anyone answer pls... thank you... i need the answer for my project.
Asked by piggy c - Fri Dec 1 10:05:30 2006 - Infectious Diseases - 1 Answers - Comments

A. It is when the body cannot fight off the infection that the organs become damaged. The body's defenses usually do a good job of beating infections, but sometimes they cannot eliminate the offender. When the body continuously fights an infection it is using massive amounts of energy, and eventually the body's main sources of energy are depleted and it must use protein for energy. This causes the body's tissues, organs, etc. to weaken and can eventually cause death. So to conclude, it is not the bacteria that directly destroys the body, it is the consequences of not being able to fight off an infection.

What iis the genus and species of Salmonella Typhi (Typhoid Fever)?
Q.
Asked by iiiiii - Thu Nov 30 22:43:01 2006 - Infectious Diseases - 1 Answers - Comments

A. According to the CDC system, the genus Salmonella contains two species, each of which contains multiple serotypes (Table 1). The two species are S. enterica, the type species, and S. bongori, which was formerly subspecies V (19, 21). S. enterica is divided into six subspecies (4, 19), which are referred to by a Roman numeral and a name (I, S. enterica subsp. enterica; II, S. enterica subsp. salamae; IIIa, S. enterica subsp. arizonae; IIIb, S. enterica subsp. diarizonae; IV, S. enterica subsp. houtenae; and VI, S. enterica subsp. indica). S. enterica subspecies are differentiated biochemically (4, 19) and by genomic relatedness (6, 19, 21). CDC uses names for serotypes in subspecies I (for example, serotypes Enteritidis, Typhimurium, Typhi,… [cont.]

Any body knows about typhoid fever?HHow long it will stay?
Q. My husband is suffering from typhoid fever(salmonella typhi) within the range of 1:80 is this a starting stage?
Asked by nisha - Wed Jan 30 08:12:14 2008 - Infectious Diseases - 3 Answers - Comments

A. I don't know what the range of 1:80 means, I have never heard it refered to in this manner. Typhoid fever varies in each individual as to how long it stays in the body. Some people are affected for only a short time (like a week or two) and some people are affected for a few years. It is not understood why there is a big range. Studies have shown that aggressive antibiotic therapy is better for an earlier cure. About 3 percent of the cases end up becoming a carrier for Typhoid. As long as your husband carries any Typhoid in his body (a blood test can tell when it is completely gone), he needs to not ever prepare food for anyone and he needs to do extremely good handwashing after using the bathroom. You also need to do extremely good… [cont.]

Q. I don't want to take 2weeks antibiotics if there is no typhoid.. doctors are saying different things.. symptoms are not totally corresp. those of typhoid fever. i'm in Indonesia. symptoms: hight fever for 24 h, then 37,2 for a week.. weakness bronchitis headache sweating no weigh loss, no stomachache
Asked by - Wed Aug 31 02:11:02 2011 - Infectious Diseases - 1 Answers - Comments

A. Typhoid Ig M negative / Widal positive would suggest that you had typhoid fever in the past. The two ways to confirm this would be #1 blood culture (attempt to isolate Salmonella Typhi from your blood) or #2 repeat the Widal test in 3-4 weeks. If the Widal titre has increased, you like have an acute case of typhoid. If the Widal titre is unchanged (or decreases), you likely had typhoid in the past. The fever is also atypical for typhoid. Typhoid typically produces as "step-ladder" fever - the fever progressively increases over a period of several days. Have your doctors explored other infections (Brucellosis, Tuberculosis, Meliodiosis)?

A. Here is a quote from the second one, "The key to avoiding infection by S. typhi is prevention of fecal contamination in drinking water and food supplies. Since the only source of this agent is infected humans, it is possible to control transmission by proper hygiene, waste management, water purification, and treatment of the sick." Read those, hope they help:)

Q. wasn't typhoid fever a plague? or an epidemic? is it irradicated? and if so... wouldnt it be bad if someone were to be diagnosed with salmonella typhi? then they would have typhoid fever, right?
Asked by swordfish - Sun Jan 24 01:47:09 2010 - Infectious Diseases - 1 Answers - Comments

A. You are confusing two different serovars of Salmonella 1.Salmonella typhi - 0=9,12,Vi /H=d,- This causes typhoid fever. The "Vi" component of the serology is the "virulence factor" a polysaccharide in the bacterias coat which allows it to attach itself to the lining of the intestine and penetrate it . When the bacteria does this it can spread via the blood stream and causes "Typhoid Fever".A vaccine against this antigen is used to protect people going to ares where typhoid is prevalent. Typhi also uses "invasin" a protein which allows it to evade the immune response and 2.Salmonella typhimurium. - O=1,4,[5},12 /H=i, 1,2 This commonly encountered serovar does not normally penetrate the gut and only… [cont.]

A. What does his physician say about the results? And, was only one test performed? According to the literature, this test can be very non-specific and show false positives, so your best answer would come from repeated testing and interpretation by a qualified professional.
