Serum Sickness Answers
Medical-addiction Question?
Q. Hey, I'm 26 and have been reliant upon opiates since I was 18. Finally, at 23 and after months of fatigue/sickness, countless attempts at anti-depressants, treatment centers, counseling, and psychiatrists, I began methadone at the Southern Indiana Treatment Center. At first I felt much better, but rather than decrease the dose my levels were increased to "find me a stable dose where I feel semi-normal.". Needless to say I am now on 110 mg of methadone once daily. I still feel crappy half the time and have started realizing that my body, with the way it metabolizes medicine so quickly, may never be OK without it. The peak-and-trough blood serum test suggests my body needs 140. Should I accept the fact that my body will always need… [cont.]

A. "Should I accept the fact that my body will always need opiates?" No. "Anyone have any suggestions?" Follow your doctor advice. And if you have money, I would suggest to afford hypnotherapy, and maybe pay people to watch you for not using drugs. Well the ideal way would be to spend your money to prevent you to do drugs. I can't tell you can be back to normal 100%. It depends on how far the drugs did damage. Didn't mean to make downer, but addiction also may past the irreversible point, in which you can't really go back as you were before (the brain)

Does anyone have or know someone that as lyme disease?
Q. My brother got bit or at least he thinks a couple weeks ago, then he developed a rash. He went to Urgent Care & they gave him amoxicillian and put him on a steriod, a couple days later he was having extreme swelling in his hand and joint pain. He called the doctor and they said to stop taking the Amoxicillian that he had what's call Serum Sickness. A week or more goes by and he is still suffering a rash, swelling and extreme joint pain from his shoulder to his fingers. He went to the hosptial last night because he said it felt like someone smacked his wrist with a baseball bat. They drew blood and now we are waiting.. They did mention Rocky Mountain Spotted Fever & Lyme disease..

A. Keri - Are you here in the Phoenix Valley? I'm guessing you might be as there is Urgent Care here. I go to a Lyme Literate MD in Mesa. He's done wonders. I'm not out of the woods by any means, but an LLMD is in order...and quickly. The longer your brother waits, the longer the virus (spirochetes) get their hooks deeper into his tissues, brain, eyes, sinovial fluids and organs. My regular MD could not help me. I went to nine doctors before finding one who knew what to do.

Can anyone tell me about Serum Sickness?
Q. A girl I knew at camp claimed she has it, and therefore was "allergic to nickel, adhesives and bug bites." When I looked it up, it said it had to do with an allergic reaction to some forms of drugs.

A. Serum sickness is the name for symptoms that result from a delayed immune system response, either to certain kinds of medications or to antiserum (given after a person has bitten by a snake or to counter exposure to rabies, for example). Serum is the clear fluid part of blood. Serum sickness is similar to an allergy, in that the body mistakenly identifies a protein from the antiserum or medication as harmful and activates the immune system to fight it off. Today, the most common cause of serum sickness is the antibiotic penicillin. Serum sickness will usually develop within 7 - 10 days after initial exposure, but sometimes it can take as long as 3 weeks. If you are exposed again to the substance, serum sickness tends to develop faster (with [cont.]

Amoxicillin - serum sickness?
Q. I've had an adverse reaction to Amoxicillin. I broke out in a rash 3 days after taking it and broke out in a rash, had joint pains and throbbing headaches. I was prescribed prednisolone and was told to take an antihistamine for 5 days and felt OK for a few days after coming off the steroids despite waking up with a headache each day. Yesterday I had a full blood, urine and chest x-ray which was fine after seeing my doctor and explaining that I had joint pain, thirst, a heavy chest and headaches and i couldnt feel my lips properly. I was just wanting to hear from anyone who has had "serum sickness" before and how long it took to get over it and whether you had any lasting effects. Has anyone ever heard of, or actually had "serum sickness"?
Q. Could it be brought on by taking daily doses of acetatminophen with codeine?
Asked by Kelly Elizabeth - Wed Feb 20 17:57:49 2008 - Respiratory Diseases - 1 Answers - Comments
A. Serum sickness is a response by your body to a medication. It can be an oral or injected med. Often, it causes a reaction in your body and your body views it as an offending substance. I had serum sickness from my Hepatitis B shots and it didn't occur until after the 3rd injection. I had hives, elevated liver enzymes, extreme fatigue, nausea and jaundice for 6 months which means my liver was giving me problems. I have recovered from this episode. Large doses of acetaminophen can cause liver problems as exhibited by elevated liver enzymes, sometimes some abdominal pain and nausea. Go to Web Md and research symptom checker and see what comes up with your symptoms.

Dry nose from Isotretinoin.?
Q. My dermatologist perscribed Isotretinoin (Claravis, Accutane) for my acne, since it was not being cleared up with any OTC products, Tretinoin (Retin-A), or minocycline (which i ended up rejecting and having serum sickness from). After the minocycline didnt work out she put me on .1% Tretinoin (before it was .04%) and it reallly dried my skin so i decided to use Iso. The thing is, she told me my mucus membranes would dry out, but she didnt tell me and I didnt ask what to do about it. As long as a put lotion on my skin it doesnt get that dry but my nose is pretty bothersome. I have been spraying my nose constantly with saline but that only provides a 10 second max effect. I really dont want to go of the medication because it is reallly… [cont.]

Eyelash growth serums during pregnancy?
Q. It says Latisse is not recommended for use during pregnancy, but latisse is so expensive anyhow. I was wondering if i could use an eyelash serum such as Neulash, or Dea Bella Lash, or Li Lash... How can an eyelash serum seriously affect the fetus, i am curious? I am 5 months pregnant. My eyelashes are not what they use to be a couple years ago (i blame too much mascara usage on my part) and i want to look AMAZING for my pregnancy photos, for my bf, but most of all... for myself. Pregnancy is super stressful, what with morning sickness, belly aches and pains, is it so bad if i give an eyelash growth serum a try? Your thoughts. &&&... Thanks.

A. I wouldn't ingest anything i didn't have to. Science doesn't know much about what we take and how it effects the fetus. And I'm pretty sure eyelash serum has not been tested on pregnant women.

Plan B taken twice, and no period?
Q. I started getting morning sickness 3 days ago, and feeling tired, dizzy... i was due on the 12th for my period. I have been pregnant 2 times before and both urine and serum were negative until i finally was able to have an ultrasound at 3 1/2 months pregnant... I took plan B 2 days after intercourse...and then 2 days after that again just because i was so nervous. but here i am not feeling well, no period, and i know what its like to be pregnant. I was just hoping to know if anyone has ever taken plan B so closely together and still gotten pregnant, as well as if anyone has ever had negative results for most of their pregnancy...? Help! antibiotic issues!?
Q. My son has had strep throat 4x's in a row. He gets off amoxcillian or augmentim for 2 days and gets it again.Last year he had it 5 times and wound up in the hospital for 3 days with serum sickness from cephsil antibiotic. Anyone know what is going on?
Asked by mgar71 - Thu Apr 12 11:37:27 2007 - Skin Conditions - 7 Answers - Comments
A. This could likely be caused by an imbalance of "good" and "bad" bacteria in his body. This can especially occur when taking antibiotics. I recommend getting him started on all natural Optiflora. It's a two-product system that includes Probiotic (Bifidus & Acidophilus...microflora) + Prebiotic (FOS...food source for microflora). Due to its patented encapsulation process, it guarantees the delivery of 500 million live microflora to the intestines. It's perfectly safe for all ages from infants to seniors with no side effects. Hope this is helpful and feel free to contact me with questions.

Due to its patented encapsulation process, it guarantees the delivery of 500 million live microflora to the intestines. It's perfectly safe for all ages from infants to seniors with no side effects. Hope this is helpful and feel free to contact me with questions.

Allergic to the flu shot???
Q. for 3 years in a row, I took the flu shot. each time, 3-6 weeks later I experienced horrendous symptoms similar to rheumatoid arthritis..fluid in between my joints actually would push the bones apart, and this would happen in pairs, and no joint was left out... knees, shoulders, hips, wrists, my jaws, ankles, etc etc...the "inflamation" would move to different joints until every joint had been affected 2 or 3 times, over the course of a 3 week period...it is horribly excruciating and disabling for the duration... I stopped taking the flu shot, but got the symptoms again after contracting the actual flu... has anyone else ever had that experience, and does anyone know why it affects me that way? I am not allergic to eggs, either... [cont.]

A. Historically, the term serum sickness connotes a self-limited immune complex disease caused by exposure to foreign proteins. Von Pirquet and Shick first described the syndrome in 1905. Approximately 8-13 days after injection with equine diphtheria antitoxin, patients developed a skin rash, fever, and to a lesser extent, facial edema, arthralgia, regional lymphadenopathy, and albuminuria. Later, physicians reported a similar clinical picture after the injection of other equine-based antitoxins and antivenins. Certain medications (eg, penicillin, nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs [NSAIDs]) have also been associated with serum sickness like disease. Typically, patients have immunoglobulin (Ig) antibodies of Ig G type. Ig M complexes are… [cont.]

Can anyone tell me about Serum Sickness?
Q. A girl I knew at camp claimed she has it, and therefore was "allergic to nickel, adhesives and bug bites." When I looked it up, it said it had to do with an allergic reaction to some forms of drugs.

A. That girl was a hypochondriac! Serum sickness results from drug reactions, or from injections of horse serum, or other serums from nonhuman sources. I am sure that girl got lots of attention from Mommy every time she got a scrape or a mosquito bite!

wat is serum sickness?
Q.

A. Serum sickness is a reaction to proteins in antiserum derived from an animal source. It is a type of hypersensitivity, specifically immune complex hypersensitivity (type 3). The term serum sickness like reaction (SSLR) is occasionally used to refer to similar illnesses that arise from the introduction of certain non-protein substances Causes Serum sickness can be developed as a result of exposure to antibodies derived from animals. These serums are generally administered in order to prevent or treat an infection or envenomation. When the antiserum is given, the human immune system can mistake the proteins present for harmful antigens. The body produces antibodies, which combine with these proteins to form immune complexes. These complexes… [cont.]

Hashimotos Thyroiditis, on Synthroid, hair getting extremely coarse and falling out?
Q. I barely even use heat on my hair anymore because of this. Before, I used to use heat everyday but I used the heat-protectant hairsprays, I would deep condition every week and my hair was in great shape before they discovered I have Hashimotos. They put me on Levothyroxine 75 MCG on May 2010 and I didn't have many problems until a month into taking the medication. I would have constant headaches and motion sickness to a point where I couldn't get into cars anymore. My headaches eventually grew worse and in March 2011 I had my next appointment. My endo only wants to see me every 8 months even though I am still having a ton of problems that she's aware of. They switched me to Synthroid 75MCG in hopes of correcting my negative symptoms and… [cont.]

A. It's not the thyroid medication that is causing your symptoms. (and Synthroid is the same thing as levothyroxine; Synthroid is the brand name for levothyroxine.) It is the thyroid disease that causes hair to fall out and coarseness of the hair. You may need another blood test to check your thyroid levels. It is very hard to stabilize meds at the right level for you, and since this was a recent diagnosis, you almost certainly should be seen more frequently than every eight months. I would suggest a second opionion with another endocrinologist, especially in light of the fact that they switched you from one form of levothyroxine to another at the same dose, thinking it would help. Over-conditioning of your hair is actually not a good idea.… [cont.]

Has anyone else had a child suffer from Serum Sickness?
Q. My son is so miserable. I cannot imagine him being in this much pain for 2 more weeks.

A. Yes, serum sickness, although manageable, can become serious in some senses...of course, this depends on the serum/sera administered to the patient. But in most, if not all, cases, an immunity would be mounted towards the "foreign serum" in the patient's body, which is the reason why symptoms of serum sickness present in a patient, with pain and malaise (general feeling of discomfort) being some of the front runner symptoms. It may look bad now, but your son will definitely recover from this, especially if your physician gives you the anti-serum for the serum that caused the sickness (I assume this might be for passive immunization of some sort because this is one case where foreign serum is used to battle, say, a toxin). I wish… [cont.]
