Etymology

From Ancient Greek σύμπτωμα (sumptōma, “a happening, accident, symptom of disease”) < stem of συμπίπτω (sumpiptō, “Ι befall”) < συν- (sun-, “together”) + πίπτω (piptō, “I fall”).
