Q. I know that it is caused due to cold weather. But there are also foods that can trigger an attack if you already have cold induced urticaria. I just don't know which foods.

How do i cope with urticaria?
Q. I have been diagnosed with chronic idiopathic urticaria and angiodema.I dont no anybody else with this condition.I am taking meds everyday and feel very tired and stressed. Is there anyone else in the same boat?!

A. Hey Katie, I have Chronic Cholinergic Urticaria (hives from heat). Anytime I get hot, I get a very itchy and prickly sensation as my body is hypersenstive to the sweating process. I don't have angiodema, but I can certainly relate to you. I know first hand how frustrating it is dealing with ANY urticaria. It can really be diffiuclt. I also feel your pain about the antihistamines. They make me drowsy as can be, so I usually don't take them much. Especially since they really don't provide much relief for my type of hives condition. Anyway, try to stay positive. You probably won't have it forever. Good luck,

How do I get permanently ride of Cholinergic Urticaria cause by heat?
Q. All of a suddenly 2 days ago I got a itchy rash all over my body and I found out it's Cholinergic Urticaria. I'm pretty sure it's cause by heat because whenever it get a little hot I break out everywhere. What medication should I take to get ride of it. Is there a way to get ride of it forever?
Asked by White D - Sat Jun 27 22:57:33 2009 - Skin Conditions - 2 Answers - Comments
A. Taking an antihistamine before you expect to get heated up (exercise, hot shower, etc) will help. If you take it afterwards, it won't work, as the "horse is out of the barn." This is a strange disorder, in that it comes on out of the blue; but luckily, it also goes away spontaneously, too. However, it may take a couple of years for it to do that.

How to get rid of Urticaria?
Q. I have a minor urticaria (also known as dermographism) and I've had it for around 3 years now. What it basically is, is when you scratch your skin the spot you scratched becomes raised, sometimes itching. Any help?

A. I had dermographism and several other forms of urticaria for about 10 years. Mine went away when I went on a gluten free diet. If you want to try a gluten free diet, the first thing you should do is get tested for celiac disease and dermititis herpetiformis which are conditions due to gluten intolerance. After the test, if it is positive, go on a gluten free diet and you should get better. If the test is negative, still try a gluten free diet for 2-3 months to see if your urticaria gets better. This will rule out non-celiac gluten intolerance and celiac/wheat allergies. Gluten is found in wheat, rye, barley and maybe oats and products made from them. The easiest way to get started on a gluten free diet is to eat fresh fruit and vegetables,… [cont.]

What is causing urticaria when prawns have been eaten on a previous episode with no reaction?
Q. My husband has eaten prawns on numerous occasions without developing acute urticaria. On 2 previous occasions he has had a reaction. Is it what they're feeding certain batches of prawns that is causing one reaction and nil in the other?
Asked by ellen g - Sat Oct 16 07:49:53 2010 - Skin Conditions - 1 Answers - Comments
A. It could be the amount of Iodine that they contain. Some people develop sensitivity to the iodine and can have a similar reaction as a prawn/shrimp allergy. Or it could be something else that is cooked in the same equipment/water such as another type of seafood.

A. Let me first say that I know what you are going through and how uncomfortable and painful they are. I had the same thing for 10 years and hopefully have some help for you. Medicines first of all. Prednisone or medrol -- I preferred medrol (4mg) and I could take 3 one day, 2 the next and then 1 for a day or two and that would stop the itching and break up a bad outbreak. Prednisone is the same but use 10mg tablets. Also, you might want to talk to your doctor about an antidepressant. When I got rid of my hives and looked back on the time I had them, I realized how depressed I had been. Ok, now the good news. I did find out what caused mine and maybe it will work for you. Could having urticaria from cold air be a symptom of pregnancy?
Q. I have had urticaria from cold air for the past few days...im 16.
Asked by Sky - Tue Jan 18 10:41:33 2011 - Pregnancy - 2 Answers - Comments
A. The first symptom most women notice is a missed period. If you haven't missed your period yet, stop stressing. If you have missed your period take a pregnancy test. Urticaria is usually a sign of an allergic reaction. It is possible to have an allergic reaction when you are pregnant, but that doesn't make it a pregnancy symptom.

How do i treat heat induced urticaria?
Q. Lately i have been breaking out in hives all over my body when i am in hot places and i have been told by the doctors that i might have agoraphobia and that its in my head but i am not sure. this thing has ruined my life i haven't been able to go to school a lot and when i go i cant last the whole day. In other words what might be causing my heat induced urticaria? it is definitely not my thyroid because its levels are normal
Asked by - Tue Feb 17 11:35:39 2009 - Skin Conditions - 5 Answers - 2 Comments
A. Agorophobia might be "in your head" (a psychological condition, but that doesn't mean it should be dismissed) but it has a biological neuro-endocrine cascade (adrenaline boost) that causes physical symptoms. You might want to seek some psychological help (I would suggest behavioral therapy) to help with the root problem, but in the mean time I would suggest trying benedryl. It will help a little with the anxiety, and possibly the Hives. The hives come from the same reaction that causes them in people with allergies...a hypersensitivity to the chemicals in your own bloodstream. Antidepressants might work as well. Keep working with your doctor on the anxiety...dont let them dismiss it.

Can I get away with MEPS not knowing about my Cholinergic urticaria?
Q. i actually havent been diagnosed with it, but im pretty sure I have it. its disqualifying, but i have no medical records of it. and it doesnt show up on blood/urine tests. can i get away with it?
Asked by John - Mon Nov 8 19:53:02 2010 - Military - 1 Answers - Comments
A. First off never lie at MEPS when the military processes you through they will find out. One, you have not been diagnosed with this condition, Two, it has never been documented in your medical records or blood/urine test, and Three, just know that if you don't disclose it is not a lie because you do not have the condition. Unfortunately, If you are diagnosed after you are in and it is a disqualifying condition you will be sent home. You also may not be sent home immediately you might have to sit in a Fitness Training Company for a while with broke privates while all the paper work is filed to chapter you back out of the military. I wish you the best and I hope that you do not have this Cholinergic urticaria.

A. I'm very sorry to say that there is no known cure. Even worse, the medical community is not sure what actually causes the condition. Perhaps in a few years more information and research will be available to more closely determine the cause for this condition. Until then, you can only treat the symptoms or use steroids to suppress the immune system.

can I get a Tattoo even though I suffer from Urticaria?
Q. Hi. I suffer from Urticaria ("Hives" if you'd like) for a long time now, and I've learned how to live with it so I don't do anything about that. My question is, can I get a tattoo in my back even though my stupid Urticaria?
Asked by Franky F - Wed Oct 22 18:44:19 2008 - Skin Conditions - 4 Answers - Comments
A. Tattooing with Urticaria most likely will inflame an outbreak. However, if you talk to a doctor, perhaps he or she can prescribe you something (or maybe even suggest Benadryl) to take beforehand so the chance of a more sever outbreak will lessen. To be sure, talk to your doctor. Or, you can even call one of the artists to ask him or her what they suggest. I'm sure they've come across it once in their career! Good luck!

Does anyone have experience with Urticaria in their dog?
Q. My dog gets this quite regularly. Well, when I say regularly I mean about once or twice a year. A. I have a short hair yellow lab, he breaks out in wheals(urticaria) whenever he goes on grass. it's particulary worse in the late spring/summer season&autumn. it started off with his ears getting inflamed&they would end up infected repeatedly. his paws would then swell up&break out with nasty dermatitis after he'd been out on or near grass(this was before we knew about allergy), he then started getting really angry looking wheals on his body & his paws were in a bad way. we were constantly taking him back and forth to the vets who were puzzled by his condition, they even suggested getting him put to sleep!!! we then changed vets&we had a diagnosis within a wk! he's very allergic to grass, oak trees, wheat and chicken!!!… [cont.]
